How to Fix Early Extension (Without the Biomechanics)
Early extension is when your hips and torso move toward the ball during the downswing — you stand up out of your address posture right before impact. It's the reason you block shots right, hook them left, or catch it thin, often in the same round.
What early extension actually is
At address your body is tilted toward the ball. During a good downswing that tilt is maintained while your hips rotate. With early extension, the hips thrust forward instead, your chest rises, and the club gets pulled toward your body — so you're left making an in-to-out rescue move with your hands.
You don't need a 3D biomechanics lab to fix it. You need a way to feel the difference between rotating and thrusting, and a drill that rewards staying in posture.
Drill 1: The wall or chair drill
Stand with your backside lightly touching a chair or a wall at address. Swing a 7-iron at half speed. If your hips thrust toward the ball, you'll push the chair forward — instant feedback. The goal is to swing through without moving it.
- 1.Set up to an iron with your backside barely touching a chair.
- 2.Take the club back, feeling your trail hip rotate behind you, not under you.
- 3.Swing through at 50% speed without letting the chair move.
- 4.10 slow reps, then a small bucket at full speed keeping the same feeling.
Drill 2: Toes-up finish
Hit short irons and hold your finish until you can lift the toes of both feet off the ground without losing balance. You can only do this with your weight balanced over your heels — the exact opposite of the forward thrust of early extension.
Drill 3: Film it and trust the analyzer
Early extension is hard to feel but easy to see. Film one face-on swing and upload it to Caddigo: the vision model reads your posture, balance and body turn across ten frames and tells you if posture loss is your main issue. Use it once a week — posture fixes are slow to feel and fast to see on camera.
